Ways to Maintain Your Manicure

Use a cotton swab with white vinegar to wipe down your nails before applying a basecoat. “This removes any buildup of natural oils on your nail beds.” Don’t soak your nails before adding colour. “Some manicurists do this to soften the cuticles but in doing so causes the nails to retain water and expand. Once they’re painted they’ll shrink, meaning your polish will shrink with them, request your manicurist use cuticle oil instead.” File your nails to mirror you cuticles, this prevents them from breaking. Avoid getting polish on your cuticles. “This causes the paint to lift with the cuticle, causing chipping. Push your cuticles back with a orange stick or pusher tool, don’t cut your cuticles.” Use a sticky basecoat to make the polish last longer. Apply two coats of basecoat to the tips of your nails. “Your nail tips are more prone to breaking with the use of everyday activities.” ie: typing, texting, grabbing, holding, etc. Roll your polish between the palms of your hands as apposed to shaking. “You want to prevent bubbles from forming, shaking creates these bubbles which in turn chip your nails faster.” Don’t skip the edge of your nails. “Run the basecoat, paint and topcoat around the edges of your nails to ensure it’s sealed and strong.” Dry with cool air. “Using hot air prevents your nails from drying properly, dipping your nails in cool water aids in drying as well.” Reapply a layer of clear topcoat every two to three days to enhance shine and prevent chipping. Wash your hands with mild soap; don’t use hand sanitizer since it dries out your nails. Apply nail oil daily to prevent your nails from drying out and chipping.
