An injured toenail bed can cause serious problems. For instance, you’re at a greater risk for infection and the nail might fall off. Even worse, if the damage to the toenail bed is severe, the nail may never grow back. If you have merely injured your toenail bed and have not lost your nail, there are some things you can do to restore it and ensure proper healing.
Inspect your toenail. If the nail itself is yellow or the skin beneath and around it is red or inflamed, you may have an infection. Schedule an appointment with your doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis and a prescription antibiotic cream to kill the infection and prevent further damage, says the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Trim your toenails regularly. Though you might wish to completely leave the toenail with the damaged bed alone, trimming the nails will prevent cracking, splitting or breaking, which can delay healing and cause more damage.
Use a moisturizer on your toenails nightly. Apply a small amount of vegetable oil to each toenail to prevent dryness and cracking of the nail, says MayoClinic.com.
Take supplements daily to strengthen your nails, encourage healing and prevent future damage. Biotin, a type of vitamin B, is especially helpful at restoring damaged toenails and toenail beds, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
